MetroAccess
MetroAccess is a partnership initiative between the Victorian Department of Human Services and Local Government. The aim of MetroAccess is to build the capacity of local communities across metropolitan Victoria so that they are more welcoming and inclusive of people with disabilities.
There are five main objectives of MetroAccess:
- To support people with disabilities to participate in community life.
- To build and strengthen the ways in which the local community supports people with disabilities and their families.
- To ensure that local planning and services engage and involve people with disabilities and their families, disability service providers and community groups.
- To work with disability support providers to help them to support people with disabilities and their families
- To ensure that people with disabilities can access information about relevant services and activities in their community.

MS Education Program
Maroondah City Council has partnered with MS Australia to provide MS Education sessions at Maroonah Federation Estate.- Understanding MS - Saturday 20 February 10.00am to 4.00pm
- Fatigue in MS - Thursday 27 May 10.00am to 12 noon
- Get Active with MS - Tuesday 10 August 10.00am to 12 noon

Stroke a Chord - Choir for people with Aphasia
The aim of the choir is to allow people with limited or no speech to experience something positive and joyful with their voice and hopefully improve their quality of life and enjoy socialising in an understanding environment.The choir is due to commence in late March 2010 and will be facilitated by a Music Therapist.
Interested members of the choir must be adults who have had a stroke and experience some communication difficulties after their stroke. Carers of stroke are also welcome to attend.

This initiative is a partnership between Maroondah City Council, Yooralla (Eastern Region Communication Service), Austin Health (Royal Talbot Music Therapy), University of Queensland, Alfred Psychiatry Research Centre, Croydon Stroke Group and Melbourne University.
Liberty Swing at Ringwood Lake Park
Thanks to the Variety Club of Victoria and a generous donation from Connect East, Maroondah now has a Liberty Swing at Ringwood Lake Park. The Liberty Swing is a revolutionary design in play equipment which offers people in wheelchairs the opportunity to enjoy the fun and recreation of swinging.
A key is needed to access the Liberty Swing, which also provides access to all Liberty Swings throughout Australia.

An exercise group for carers of people with a disability. A qualified fitness professional conducts the exercise program, which is suitable for all fitness levels. The group exercise program is a joint initiative between Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre Eastern Metropolitan region, Respite for Carers program at EACH and Maroondah City Counci.
People wanting to join the exercise group should contact Caitlin at UCCO and not the Croydon Leisure and Aquatic Centre to register their interest.

RECHARGE scheme
RECHARGE is a MetroAccess initiative in partnership with the Scoot Wheel 'N' Move project, local businesses and Mobility Aids Australia Pty Ltd. The program aims to encourage local businesses to provide power points in the business outlet for recharging electric scooter/wheelchair batteries.
At present, 17 retail outlets around the City of Maroondah are participating in this scheme. Businesses participating in the program will have the RECHARGE logo displayed on their shop front.
Visit the RECHARGE scheme website for more information about the program. The website also includes a RECHARGE finder so that you can find your nearest RECHARGE point, including RECHARGE points in Maroondah.
