The Ringwood Central Activities District Project

Ringwood was designated a Central Activities District in Melbourne 2030 Update: Melbourne @ 5 million.  This policy update responds to higher than anticipated population growth, requiring a change to the structure of metropolitan Melbourne from its reliance on one major centre towards multiple major centres, to reduce congestion and maintain Melbourne’s liveability.

By providing new jobs and a mix of housing in higher density environments close to public transport, Central Activity Districts aim to improve housing affordability, reduce congestion and provide opportunities for private investment and business innovation.

As the Central Activities District for Melbourne’s outer-east, the vision for Ringwood is to provide city-centre style jobs, commercial services, retail, community services and residential opportunities with high levels of accessibility to all modes of transport.  If this vision is realised, significant net benefits for Victorians will accrue, spanning across productivity improvements, congestion and infrastructure cost savings, better accessibility to jobs and services, improved amenity and more affordable housing.

Ringwood is one of six Central Activities Districts and is the evolution of the Central Activities District program which is about revitalising these strategic locations and making them economically stronger and better places to live and work.
